Long Beach emergency officials tested a new communication system Thursday night to prepare for another major disaster.

Police conducted a test-run of the Neighborhood Emergency Team Program throughout the city. The alert system, which relies on footwork instead of electricity, was developed after downed power lines left residents without a means to connect during Hurricane Sandy.

The system features neighborhood and block coordinators who go door-to-door and give people updates. For the test, homeowners were required to stand outside with a blue candle so a police helicopter could count the number of affected residents.

The results of the flyover are likely to be available on Friday.
