Some Long Island residents say the Mobi-Mats used to help the disabled navigate to the surf line in Long Beach are too short – leaving those with wheelchairs and walkers stuck in the sand.
The pilot program launched by the city this summer is an effort to help people with special needs enjoy the beach near the shore.
According to a Long Beach website, the mats are supposed to extend to or in the vicinity of the surf line where most beachgoers camp. However, the mats are much further inland than promised.
The Long Beach Americans with Disabilities Act compliance officer released a statement saying in part, "The City of Long Beach is fully ADA compliant. We are all in agreement that we should always be looking to do more than the legal minimum and provide as much accessibility as possible to our residents."
Officials also blamed the shortened mats on work being performed by the Army Corps of Engineers.
A city spokesperson says the Mobi-Mats located at Tennessee Avenue will be extended closer to the surf line after the Fourth of July weekend. The city is also looking into grants to support the program and improve mat maintenance.
