A Long Beach landlord who pleaded guilty to running an illegal boarding house received a two-day prison sentence Friday.
Mona Liza Daos pleaded guilty to 16 counts in connection with her East Chester Street house. Prosecutors said 29 people lived in the two-family home.
Maria Aramanda, Daos' attorney, said her client accepted the plea bargain to put the situation behind her, not because the agreement was fair. "I think that the sentencing on a housing and building code violation is completely in excess, completely inappropriate," Aramanda said.
Long Beach Tax Assessor Noreen Costello believes the sentence fits the crime. "The fire hazards that were created here, the health issues that were created here definitely warrant a stiff penalty," she said.
Aside from the two days behind bars, Daos will serve 40 hours of community service and pay the maximum $5,000 fine. Daos' prison term begins Wednesday.
