Security has been stepped up in public places, including on Long Island, in the wake of the terror attack on London Bridge and a violent stabbing incident in the Netherlands.
Even though there is no credible threat to Long Island malls, police are asking shoppers to remain vigilant. Extra police patrols have been added to malls in both Nassau and Suffolk counties.
“What we're doing is enhanced patrols with visible marked cars in mall areas, as well as an area that has increased pedestrian traffic,” says Suffolk Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart. “We're also having plainclothes officers at different locations.”
Hart also says they have live surveillance camera feeds from certain downtown areas that police monitor in real time. Certain intelligence is also shared with the FBI and Joint Terrorism Task Force.
Police say not to hesitate to call 911 if something seems suspicious.
