Residents who live around Bethpage State Park are taking advantage of their prime location to cash in on the U.S. Open action.
One homeowner charging $50 for parking said he was making between $500 and $700 a day, hoping to rake in $5,000 by the end of the tournament.
During Thursday?s downpour, one college student put her business classes to good use, holding tournament-goers? cell phones at $5 a pop. Cell phones and other mobile devices are banned from the park during the Open.
Others sold food, beverages, ponchos and umbrellas.
Farmingdale Village officials warn residents can be fined $350 for letting someone park on their lawns.
