Meanwhile, the cleanup from the storm is far from over. That's for sure. If you've tried to leave the house, you know the roads, a lot of them need work. And joining us now to talk about what's next, the Nassau Community Disaster Program manager for the Long Island Red Cross, Jason Lyons. Jason, thanks for joining us so early this morning. What concerns do you have about folks who have to be out and about today? Yeah, good morning and thank you for having, having us here on the show this morning. Uh, yeah, so this, you know, some of the concerns we have are are around, particularly around persons, you know, wanting to clear the snow this morning, wanting to do what work they have to do to keep themselves, you know, safe, uh, and we encourage that. However, we do stress that, you know, if you're going to be going outside to do shoveling. And cleaning your cars and things like that, you know, wear multiple layers of clothing. You want to put on multiple layers, that's going to help you, about 2 or 3 layers of clothing, and then wear something on top of that, that's water and windproof, right? Uh, wear something that will keep the wind off of you, uh, as well, you know, keep your, your fingers, your appendages and so on intact, but wear some nice thick gloves, that's going to help you to stay, um, stay warm, uh, avoid that. Frostbite, uh, and, and also with the the gloves you wear. If you can't find some that are waterproof, you want to do that as well. Obvious things, but we want to encourage people to do the, the, the necessary. Take breaks while shoveling, uh, you know, you want to avoid having heart attack or, or cardiac arrest or anything like that happening to you once you, you are there. So take a break, take a breather, uh, do some, take a break, do some, take a break. Um, Strongly encourage that and even though it's cold, you want to hydrate, you may not feel like you wanna drink some water, but you should, cause it's the, the cold doesn't replace the water you put in your system, so make sure to hydrate and get your, you know, keep your, keep yourself warm whilst doing it. If you're stuck in the snow, if you're stuck in a car somewhere, um, or you're going out and you want. You could get stuck. Be careful. Stay in your car, uh, and wait for help if you need to. Uh, hire a bright cloud outside if you have something on your antenna, and then, uh, run the engine every 10 minutes or so to stay warm and crack a window just to get some air to circulate in. Crews are working to clear the roads all across the island and joining us right now is Riverhead's town supervisor Jerry Halpin. Jerry, thanks for joining us this morning. How would you describe the situation in your town right now? Well, you know, uh, the continuation of cleanup is happening. I was out with crews last night. I rode with our highway crew. Uh, I was making sure that our roads are getting cleared. It was. Enjoyable fun, my first experience in the highway trucks, but they're going to be working all day today. We have schools closed, no garbage pickup. If you don't need to go out, stay home. Let them get your neighborhood cleaned up, so tomorrow we're back in action. You know, a lot of us experience roads really being clear on the way and at least the major roads, but you have to always account for that ice that's on top, the black ice. You may not know what you're driving through. Absolutely. And here in Riverhead, you know, north of 25, we have so much drifting with the wind and the. You know, it just continues to blow back over. So our crews have been out all night, you know, our, our EMS, I saw them out last night making a run and they were led by our fantastic crews. So, yeah, so the main, the main arteries seem to be passable, but everybody take your time and if you don't need to go out, stay home, do a board game, watch News 12. That sounds good, Jerry. And joining us now is the Southold town supervisor, Al Krpsky. Al, thanks for joining us this morning. We just spoke with your colleague from Riverhead just next door. Uh, he said the roads are pretty good there, Jerry Halpin. How about in Southhold? Yeah, I just got off the phone with the highway Superintendent Dan Goodwin here and, and Police Chief Steve Grattan for an update. It was a, uh, a challenging storm because of the duration of it. And um well forecast, so we were grateful for that, I tell you, you know, we listened to News 12 for the forecast. We made a decision on Friday to close on today, on Monday, because um the conditions on the roads are not great. Public safety being our main concern, we wanna make sure everybody stays home and you have plenty of time to prepare. And for the most part, you know, the report was that most people stayed home. They didn't become uh uh uh an item on your news because they did something uh that they shouldn't have been doing during the storm and they stayed safe. As far as the roads go, you know, it is what it is. There, it's a, it's a, it's cold weather. The, the ground was frozen when it started to snow. Uh, we had multiple equipment breakdowns, which is pretty normal, and it just highlights the amount of responsibility everybody has from budgeting from snow equipment to actually, you know, the men who are out there all night to using it safely. We know the cleanup from the storm is going to be a long one. It's not an easy one. Joining us now, the head of Babylon's Public Safety Committee, Councilman Terrence McSweeney. Thanks for joining us. Um, how is it in Babylon right now considering all the factors we just mentioned? Good morning. So yes, this was a very treacherous storm. It was, uh, it came down. It looked very nice. It was a nice beautiful white snow, and then unfortunately it turned over to freezing rain, which made hampered a lot of our cleanup efforts. But today is the day where we're going to, uh, you're going to see the significant improvements with cleanups, but we still ask our residents to stay off the roads, keep your cars off the roads, let our plows go in now and do the actual cleanup while we. Maintained open roads throughout the storm, but Babylon's looking pretty good right now. We hit just about all 530+ miles of roadway at least once, and we're praying for some sunshine maybe to help out with the cleanup efforts. A lot of talk has been about how the salt or that you put on the roads, if it's too cold, it doesn't work for Long Islanders who are nervous about that, you know, their roads plowed, but they don't know whether or not they're going to slip or is that the situation there? What are you guys going to do to deal with that? Certainly. So I have, I'm joined here with the DPW commissioner Vincent Baccoli, uh, who can maybe talk about the ice and the, uh, the, the rock, the, uh, the salt, I'm sorry. And, uh, but it To help the snow, and the, the, the ice melt, you definitely with the salt, a little sunshine added, uh, especially with temperatures being so cold, sometimes the ice melt doesn't take effect. Uh, I don't know if there's a, a given number. Uh, usually at around 20 degrees, the salting operation gets less effective. But Councilman McSweeney is correct. The sunshine will help activate that salt and, and make it a little more effective. Cold temperatures are definitely going to create icy conditions. We're gonna call Mother Nature in for a little overtime to help out with the efforts. Yeah, that's for sure. Every little bit helps. Uh, thank you both for joining us. We appreciate it. Thank you.
