A live hand grenade was found early Saturday morning at a recycling facility in West Babylon.
Police say they responded to the Omni Recycling Facility just before 8 a.m. after the grenade was found by an employee.
"They said it was a live grenade. So, I wasn't taking any chances," said Brian Nohs, Omni's manager. "I didn't touch it. Stay away from it, let them handle it."
The device was safely detonated by emergency service officers.
The facilty's owner, Patricia DiMatteo, says the grenade also had a note attached to it.
"From what I understand from the facility manager...he said there was a paper note that was wired to the pin of the grenade and something to the effect of 'fix my Mercedes,'" says DiMatteo.
DiMatteo says the company accepts materials from contractors, landscapers or any member of the public.
Police tell News 12 the Suffolk County Police Department's Arson Squad is investigating the discovery.
