(10/18/06) SYOSSET ? In a report to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority board, acting Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) President Raymond Kenny described Wednesday the improvements the rail road has made in the wake of several gap-related commuter incidents.
Approximately a dozen injuries have occurred by people falling through the platform gaps since this summer, including a Minnesota teenager who died after being hit by a train at the Woodside station. More than one third of gap accidents occur at Shea Stadium. Kenny says the track at that location has already been moved closer to the platform. He told the board that stations in Jamaica, Huntington, New Hyde Park, Hicksville, Deer Park, Merillon Avenue and Mineola are all in line for track movement soon.
In another effort to reduce gap accidents, Kenny says the LIRR has posted many more ?Watch the Gap? signs and has produced a television public service announcement.
