After being left in the cold for more than a day, residents of a Baldwin apartment building finally had their heat turned back on Thursday evening.
Thirteen families had no heat for approximately 27 hours beginning at 3 p.m. on Wednesday. Several residents were told they might have to spend Thursday night in a shelter before officials from the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County Department of Health and the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) arrived. Although the Edna Court building was recently sold, LIPA says the heat was shut off because former landlord, Ira Sumpkin, failed to pay the bill.
Town officials say Sumpkin, a business owner in Hempstead, has previously been cited for violations. They say they will issue a new citation when he is tracked down.
