Long Islanders may be paying more to power their homes in 2020.
LIPA trustees approved a delivery charge increase of 2.45% on Wednesday.
The increase will add an extra $1.86 to the average residential customer's power bill.
LIPA says the increase will be offset by a projected decline in other charges, including the power supply charge. LIPA says residents will only have to pay an additional 13 cents per month.
Fred Gorman, with the watchdog group Long Island Energy Surveillance, says the utility's calculation may not be accurate because it relies heavily on a prediction.
"Unfortunately the guy has to pay based on your guess, whether it's a good guess or a bad guess it comes out of my pocket," says Gorman. "And I'm sick and tired of paying for bad guesses."
LIPA is standing by the decision and issued a statement saying, "PSEG Long Island bills are expected to remain flat while we continue to invest in reliability, storm resiliency, clean energy, and energy efficiency."
The LIPA board also authorized $560 million in new borrowing to upgrade the local electric grid, while expanding sources of green energy.
