A Honduran national has been indicted on numerous charges related to the violent kidnapping of his former girlfriend last month.

The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office says Darli Mejia, 42, picked the victim up from work and claimed he would give her a ride home on June 20.

After realizing he was not driving toward her apartment, she asked him to pull over so she could call a taxi.

Meija allegedly took her cellphone and continued driving toward his residence in Brentwood. Upon arrival, authorities say he forced her inside his apartment.

Prosecutors say he bit her face and dragged her into the backyard when she resisted. He went on to strangle her with one hand and cover her nose and mouth with the other.

The victim lost consciousness during the strangulation and only woke up when Meija performed chest compressions to revive her, according to authorities.

Prosecutors say she agreed to enter his apartment after he promised to call her an ambulance. Once they entered, she locked herself in his bathroom and convinced him to return her cellphone.

She called 911 and Suffolk police arrested Meija at the scene. Prosecutors say the victim was taken to South Shore University Hospital for treatment.

The charges against Meija include kidnapping, strangulation, sexual abuse, unlawful imprisonment, grand larceny, criminal mischief and harassment.

He is due back in court on Aug. 10. He faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted of the top count.
