The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) is giving its utility bill a makeover.
LIPA chairman Richard Kessel says the new bill will be easier for customers to read and will simplify lines of confusing charges into three areas. The new bill will list delivery and system charges, supply charges and taxes. Kessel says any changes to the bill will be noted in a line underneath the charges explaining the reason and amount of any increase or decrease.
Some energy experts warn the new bill might not be so transparent. Former LILCO executive Matthew Cordaro says the changes may be an attempt to camouflage the concept of surcharges that have been a lightning rod of criticism for LIPA.
