Parents in Lindenhurst are confused and concerned after getting conflicting reports about a student possibly bringing a flare gun to school.

Parents say they received an automated call from the district's superintendent on Tuesday, claiming a sixth-grader at Lindenhurst Middle School allegedly showed a weapon to two fellow students. The call went on to say those students reported the incident to their parents, who then notified the school.

Suffolk County police later determined that the weapon in question was a flare gun, and that the alleged incident took place after school hours and off school grounds. They say they found the flare gun inside the student's home, and they can't confirm if he ever brought it to school.

Many parents say they believe the school district handled the situation well, and that security measures there are as tight as they need to be.
