Lindenhurst is looking to crack down on crime by installing new surveillance cameras in public spaces.
The village board set to vote Tuesday to install about a dozen cameras in public spaces, with a main focus on the LIRR commuter parking lots. Other spots include Village Hall and the marina.
Village Mayor Michael Lavorata says the goal is to deter crimes like car break-ins.
"Our goal is a safe, walkable downtown, for families," he says.
People in the area who spoke with News 12 on Monday expressed support for the added security measures.
Lavorata says the marina already has some surveillance cameras, but it's been years since they were updated or replaced.
The new system would allow officials to check the footage from the new video cameras right from a smartphone.
"They can hop on the phone and go 'I think I'll take a look at what's going on in the marina. Oh great there's something down there, let me head down there now,'" Lavorata says.
News 12 reached out to the ACLU for a comment but have not heard back.
