The Lighthouse Mission says it is short on turkey donations this year with the increase of homelessness on Long Island.
"This time of year it's kind of unusual for us to be so low, but it seems like the need has gone up, but the donations have gone way down, so we are struggling to bring in some food," says Pastor Jim Ryan, of the Lighthouse Mission.
The mission also provides food for needy people every day.
Ryan says some of the people who are given food each week are grandparents and parents who are trying to get from paycheck to paycheck. He says the Lighthouse Mission tries to fill the gap by providing them with a little bit of food each week.
The pastor says that the weekly food that the Lighthouse Mission provides can alleviate fears of choosing between whether to put oil in a fuel tank or eating.
