Now that Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) has effectively sealed the Democratic nomination for president, talk has turned to who he will pick as a running mate.
Obama said Thursday that former contender Sen. Hillary Clinton will be among those he will consider. Many Long Islanders are decisive one way or the other about whether the so-called ?dream ticket? would actually be a dream ticket. Some say definitely not, while others say it?s the only way he?ll win the general election.
Some on Long Island are not jumping ahead, but savoring Obama?s accomplishment of being the first black candidate on a major party ticket. In Hempstead Thursday, retired Nassau County worker Lesley Welch said he thought he?d never live to see the day when an American of color had a legitimate show at becoming president.
Some young students told News 12 Long Island that Obama?s almost certain nomination is a signal to them that they can accomplish their own dreams.
?The unexpected is to be expected today,? Juanita Addison, of Roosevelt, said. She wants to become a New York State-certified teacher.
Clinton is expected to endorse Obama Saturday, June 7 at a rally to promote party unity.
