Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani dropped out of the presidential race Wednesday after a defeat in the Florida primary.
Giuliani finished in third place behind winner Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney. The former mayor was banking on a win in Florida to give him momentum for Super Tuesday on Feb. 5, where more than 1,000 delegates are at stake in states such as New York, New Jersey and California. The third-place spot is Giuliani's best performance and after seven contests, he has one delegate.
Giuliani announced he is throwing his support to Sen. McCain at Ronald Reagan's presidential library ahead of a debate between between the final candidates.
At a Hicksville bagel shop, some Long Islanders said they were upset that it appears the man called "America's Mayor" was dropping out. Some said they are still hoping there will be another chance for Giuliani to run for president. On the Democratic side, Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) was victorious in Florida. The win does not bring the senator any delegates, however. The national party took Florida's delegates away after the state decided to hold its primary before Feb. 5. Sen. Clinton called the victory a "vote of confidence."
