Long Islanders turned out at Eisenhower Park Sunday to honor the men and women who died defending the United States. They saluted an honor guard made up of veterans from all conflicts since World War II. Many veterans urged Long Islanders to take a moment this weekend to remember the sacrifices. Veterans believe the holiday is about much more than barbecues."We actually put our lives on the line for the country because we knew, especially in my time ? the second World War ? we were risking losing this beautiful nation," said Pat Casseta, of the United Veterans Organization.
The ceremony also recognized two new names added to the park's Medal of Honor monument: Navy chaplain Vincent Capodanno and Navy SEAL Lt. Michael Murphy.
