The Long Island Expressway was reopened this morning after being closed by the governor for eight hours.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo officially closed the LIE in Nassau and Suffolk counties at midnight.

The initial plan was to reopen the LIE at 5 a.m. However, the time was pushed back by three hours because the storm was still blowing snow.

The closure forced hundreds of thousands of commuters to stay home or make alternate plans. Some people ignored the closure and were seen driving on the LIE anyway.

Gov. Cuomo had warned that those who disobeyed the order to stay off the highway could have faced misdemeanor charges if they were pulled over.
