Monday marks the 74th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
Pete Fabregas, now 89, was a teenager during the surprise attack in 1941. About 2,400 Americans were killed and more than 1,000 others were injured.
The horrible day motivated him to join the service when he turned 18.
Fabregas was sent to Iwo Jima as a Marine in February 1945 where the Japanese opened fire.
"No matter where my eyes settled, there were guys dying," he recalled. "I started to get scared."
Fabregas won't be doing anything special on the Pearl Harbor anniversary, but says he will always remember it as a day that changed the rest of his life.
The White House has ordered all flags to be flown at half-staff Monday in honor of Pearl Harbor Day.
