Schools on the Island are dealing with possible threats in the midst of the eight-year Columbine anniversary and the Virginia Tech massacre. West Middle School in the Brentwood School District is one Long Island school that was forced to take extra security measures Friday. The principal sent out a note Thursday acknowledging that a student claimed to overhear a bomb threat for Friday. Ms. Ratuszny told parents in the letter that officials checked the school Thursday and that extra security officers would be at the school on Friday. Thirty-two students were killed at Virginia Tech Monday before the shooter, Cho Seung-Hui, turned the gun on himself. The massacre was the deadliest shooting rampage in modern U.S. history.Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado was closed Friday and has been closed every April 20 since the attack in 1999. Two students killed 12 other students and a teacher before killing themselves in the attack.
