A total of 15 students from across Long Island were chosen to advance in the prestigious Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology.
Bongseok Jung, a junior from Herricks High School, was chosen as a regional finalist for his research on a compound that may help cure colon cancer.
Sarah Lee and Kunal Shah, both from Syosset High School, also made the cut.
Kunal advanced for his work on alternative energy, and Sarah researched pain management.
Sarah and Kunal will present their experiments to the Siemens panel on Nov. 21 in hopes of being chosen as national finalists.
All three students have been awarded a $1,000 scholarship.
If they are chosen as national finalists, they will then move into the final phase of the competition where they can win anywhere between a $10,000 and $100,000 scholarship.
