(09/27/06) RIVERHEAD - The public voiced their concerns about the $7 billion proposed sale of KeySpan Energy to National Grid USA at a hearing in Riverhead Wednesday.
The New York State Assembly Energy Commission organized the event where Long Island residents voiced environmental, service, reliability and, most of all, rate concerns. In an effort to ease the rate concerns, National Grid USA CEO Michael Jesanis pledged to maintain flat rates for 18 months. Residents in attendance say they remain worried about rate hikes after that period is up.
Union representatives for the workforce say they are very happy about a tentative deal struck with KeySpan and London-based National Grid that includes a no layoff pledge.
New York State?s Public Service Commission must approve the buyout for it to proceed. A second public hearing is scheduled in New York City next month.
