A teacher killed in the Florida school shooting who is being hailed a hero was a Long Island native.
Students say Scott Beigel, 35, was shot trying to lock the classroom door to shield them. Beigel was among 17 people killed yesterday at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
Beigel grew up in Dix Hills, according to Newsday.
