(AP) - A Long Island high school student was arrested and charged with making threats of an impending mass shooting at Newfield High School in Selden.
Suffolk police arrested 17-year-old Brian Schropfer on Monday and charged the student at Newfield High School with a misdemeanor for falsely reporting an incident. He was freed on bail and ordered to return to First District Court on April 28.
Police say the honor student contacted Newfield High School students by phone and the Internet on February 22 to start a rumor of a school shooting on Monday, February 25.
Concerned students and parents notified school officials who suspended Schropfer on February 25 and called police.
Investigators determined the threat was false. They said Schropfer was spreading the rumor in hopes that he'd get a day off from school on February 25.
