LI Dems call for special prosecutor after Comey firing
Long Island's congressional delegation is split down party lines when it comes to their thoughts on President Donald Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey.
Long Island Reps. Kathleen Rice, Tom Suozzi and Gregory Meeks have already called on the White House and the Department of Justice to appoint a special prosecutor to look into allegations of Trump campaign and Russian collusion during the 2016 election.
Rep. Rice took it a step further, adding, "Congress must appoint an independent, non-partisan commission to ensure the American people get all the facts about Russia's interference in our democratic elections."
Many Republicans are backing the president's decision, and some point out that just a few months ago, it was the Democrats calling for the FBI director's dismissal.
"They are jumping the gun calling for a special prosecutor after they were the ones tearing Jim Comey down for the last six months," says Rep. Peter King. "There's no basis for a special prosecutor because there is no evidence of any crime being committed."
Even though Rep. King says he doesn't believe a special prosecutor is necessary, he does say that the president's next choice to lead the FBI has to be someone who is not considered political and with impeccable credentials.
