A North Amityville adult education center custodian, who is registered as a level 3 sex offender, was arrested Thursday for allegedly attacking a 36-year-old student.

Investigators say Larry Smith, of Wyandanch, approached the woman, who was alone in a classroom before her class, and began to grope her against her will. According to police, the victim resisted and began to cry and Smith left the room.

In 1985, Smith was convicted of the rape and sodomy of a 9-year-old girl. In 1994, he was convicted of sexually abusing a 6-year-old girl. Smith was arrested and charged with sexual abuse and forcible touching for the incident. School officials say the county never revealed Smith's sex offender status when he was placed at the school by the labor department.
