Mostly sunny skies for the start of our day, and overall, we're looking at a pretty nice day across Long Island. A few more clouds will mix in during the afternoon, with just a slight chance of a couple of hit-and-miss showers toward the evening, mainky between 4 and 9pm. Most of the day will stay dry, so outdoor plans are looking good. High temperatures will reach the 80s away from the shoreline, with cooler 70s at the beaches.

For tonight, a few spotty showers will be possible during the early evening, but there's no reason to cancel any outdoor plans. Most areas will stay dry, and we'll transition to partly cloudy skies as we head through the overnight hours. Temperatures will cool into the 60s by the time you wake up Saturday morning.

Long Island tonight forecast

Saturday is shaping up to be another nice summer day. Expect mostly sunny skies with a few afternoon clouds and a bit of a breeze at times. High temperatures will be in the upper 70s and lower 80s. Saturday night stays dry and comfortable under partly cloudy skies, with overnight lows once again dropping into the 60s.

We'll start Sunday with some sunshine before clouds gradually increase during the afternoon. Most of the daytime hours should be dry, but we'll be watching for some late-day showers and possibly a thunderstorm toward Sunday evening. High temperatures will reach the lower 80s before that chance of unsettled weather arrives to wrap up the weekend.

LOCAL WATER QUALITY

Every Thursday, there is an update to water quality at 30 sites around Long Island from The Gobler Laboratory at Stony Brook University. This week, the water quality is generalized as fair, with 10 sites having good water quality, 13 having FAIR water quality and 7 having poor water quality.

The main issue at the "poor" sites was harmful algal blooms that are harmful to marine life, but not humans. Reminder: check with the county health departments for more information on where swimming is permitted as well as more information.

DROUGHT UPDATE

Every Thursday morning, we get an update on local Long Island drought conditions. This week's update showed even more improving conditions, but there is still a moderate to severe drought for the southern half of Long Island and also the North Fork.
