New York Assembly Republicans from Long Island are proposing a holiday from the state gas tax during the peak summer driving season.
The lawmakers say the pause would cost the state $500 million over the three months between Memorial Day and Labor Day. A gas tax suspension would lower gas prices 32 cents.
The Republican legislators say doing nothing would do more harm to the state's economy.
"The effects of this could be disastrous if we don't act and act soon," Assemblyman Rob Walker (R-Hicksville) says.
The proposal has yet to be approved by the full Legislature.
