Nassau Legislator Roger Corbin was indicted Wednesday on charges of tax evasion and making false statements.
The 18-page complaint against Corbin says he did not pay income taxes on nearly $250,000 he received between Feb. 2005 and Dec. 2007. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, the 62-year-old Democrat cashed 81 checks worth $226,000 from a developer and never declared the money. Investigators say the checks were connected to a federally funded revitalization project in New Cassel.
Federal agents say Corbin told them he gave the money to the construction workers and denied making personal use of any of it. One of the alleged recipients died in 2005, though Corbin received the checks through the end of 2007.
Officials say Corbin spent about $108,000 of the money on personal expenses, including some in Atlantic City.
Presiding Officer Diane Yatauro says Corbin remains a legislator and will continue to represent his district. Corbin has sat on the Legislature since 1995. If convicted, Corbin faces fines and several years in prison.
