Leaders calling for funding to keep ferry from Brooklyn to Governor’s Island free

Free weekend ferry service from Brooklyn to Governor’s Island is in danger of ending, and local and state leaders are calling for funding to make sure that doesn’t happen.
Many Brooklyn residents tell News 12 they use the green spaces on Governor’s Island often on the weekends.
It’s accessible by the NYC Ferry and weekend service is free from May through October, thanks to state funding, but that funding is about to run out.
State Sen. Andrew Gounardes was joined by other state and local leaders to call for $625,000 to be allocated in the budget for the free ferry service.
Of the one million annual visitors to the island, 43% of them arrive using the free service, according to a press release from the senator’s office.
