Long Islanders looking to cross the last items off their shopping lists took to malls and other stores Tuesday.

Many stores say that sales have not met expectations this year, prompting large-scale discounts on items.

Retailers including Macy's, Target, Kohl's and Toys R Us opened with extended hours on Christmas Eve.

Shoppers told News 12 that the extended hours and deep sales made it easy to wait until the last minute to grab some extra gifts.

Many stores in Westbury and the Roosevelt Field mall were closed by 6 p.m., but other stores in areas like Carle Place stayed open a little later.
