A popular Lake Grove roller coaster went up, but did not come down as it stranded more than a dozen kids Saturday night and potentially revealed much bigger problems.
Firefighters rescued 14 people after a cracked wheel bearing stopped the coaster at its peak at entertainment center Sports Plus. After the Lake Grove fire marshal responded to the scene, he issued several fire code violations. The marshal claims owner Bill Reitzig waited 30 minutes before calling the fire department. Reitzig denies the claim, but admits to problems with four fire extinguishers, a fire alarm and some extension cords.
The state Department of Labor must inspect the broken roller coaster before Sports Plus can re-open it. Reitzig says the inspection could come within the next few days.
