The Obama administration is getting a first-hand look at the rebuilding efforts on Long Island following Superstorm Sandy.
Labor Secretary Thomas Perez joined Nassau County lawmakers on a tour of the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant in East Rockaway, which was devastated by the storm.
A $37.2 million project is underway to build a wall and berm around the facility to protect it from future storms.
Secretary Perez says the job Long Islanders have done restoring the plant is remarkable.
The visit highlights the use of apprenticeship programs in labor agreements. More than 200 unionized laborers have worked on the rebuilding effort at the plant, including 23 apprentices.
