A college student from Long Island is one step closer to scoring a one-way ticket to Mars.
Duke University student Laurel Kaye, of Kings Park, is hoping to be one of the candidates sent to the planet in 2024.
The Mars One candidates were recently whittled down from more than 200,000 to 100. The field will be narrowed to 24 this fall.
"For me, this is my passion...pushing human boundaries and going where no one has gone before," said Kaye in a Skype interview.
Laurel says she is applying to graduate programs for next year, in the event she is not chosen for the Mars One project.
