A free, week-long camp on the East End aims to reduce the stigma around stuttering.
More than a dozen children and teens who stutter have been celebrating their voices at Camp Dream.Speak.Live.
The special program is run by the Department of Speech-Language Pathology in the School of Health Professions on the Stony Brook Southampton campus.
Throughout the week, participating students learn to build confidence and self-advocacy.
"We write about stuttering and about what to do when you’re talking to someone and you’re stuttering," said Liam Jerome of Coram.
An open-mic talent show was held Thursday, where campers were able to showcase a hobby or special skill in front of family, peers, and guests.
"You learn how to deal with situations, we do skits or a food truck to help ordering with ourselves, we say what we want and learn different tricks," Charlie Rosso of Riverhead recalled.
The camp was open to kids ages 5 through 17 and was free for all families.
