Hundreds of Nassau students got geared up with supplies they will need at the start of the school year.
The seventh annual Back 2 School Store event was held Sunday at Hewlett High School.
The event is free and hosted by the nonprofit National Council of Jewish Women, Peninsula Section.
"We get more out of it than the kids do, it's so rewarding," says president of the nonprofit, Myra Garber. "It's in our hearts and we're just so happy to do it."
Organizers say it's like a department store for children in elementary school, whose families need financial assistance getting ready for the new school year.
Volunteers act as personal shoppers and help the kids choose brand new items like winter coats, sneakers, socks, clothes, books, backpacks and stuffed animals -- whatever they need to start the school year off on the right foot.
Organizers say giving kids this opportunity may help with their self-esteem and get them excited about going back to school.
In addition to the Back 2 School Store event, there was also a resource center for parents with information about health, nutrition, the community and social services.
