Nassau County Legislator Kevan Abrahams announced his candidacy for the 4th congressional district Wednesday.
The announcement now pits him against Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice in a Democratic primary set for June 24.
Abrahams says serving as a county legislator for 11 years has given him an understanding of what really matters to the people of Nassau, including taxes, curbing gun violence, education and pay inequity for women.
"These are all the issues I've been passionate about in the county and will continue to be passionate about in Washington," said Abrahams.
A campaign spokesman for Kathleen Rice said in a statement, "Whether it's combating gun violence or fighting for communities and families in need, Kathleen Rice has an unmatched record of independent advocacy for our district. A primary campaign provides a great opportunity to highlight these distinctions."
Republicans Bruce Blakeman and Frank Scaturro have also announced their candidacy for the seat being vacated by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy. McCarthy announced in January that she would not pursue her re-election.
