History was made in Nassau County on Wednesday when Joyce A. Smith was sworn in as the county's acting district attorney.
She became the first black person to fill the role.
The Hempstead resident and Army veteran first joined the District Attorney's Office in 2018.
Smith takes the post that was left vacant by Madeline Singas, who was confirmed yesterday to the New York state Court of Appeals.
There is no word yet on whether Smith will officially run for office this fall, which is when Nassau County will hold an election to find its next district attorney.
