An appellate court issued John White a stay of sentence while he appeals his conviction for manslaughter and weapons charges in the death of a teen.
White was sentenced to 2-4 years in prison Wednesday for the death of 17-year-old Daniel Cicciaro.
The sentencing of White is the latest chapter of a racially charged case that began in August 2006. He claimed self defense throughout his trial.
Cicciaro and his friends went to White?s house and apparently threatened White?s son, Aaron. White says after a fight broke out, his gun accidentally discharged and shot Cicciaro in the face, killing him.
White was convicted in December of manslaughter and weapons charges. He had faced 5-15 years in prison.
Cicciaro?s family expressed their disgust over White?s punishment. Cicciaro?s father yelled out expletives after the sentencing. He also made a comment that may have contained a veiled threat.
?You can grab an illegal handgun and shoot someone in the face and get away with it ? Well let?s see what happens when Aaron White gets shot and see how the laws are,? Cicciaro Sr. said.
The Suffolk County assistant district attorney said if a threat was made to White?s son, it will be investigated.
Meanwhile, White?s bail has been set at $200,000.
