Four New York state beaches on Long Island reopened this weekend with restrictions put in place to contain the spread of COVID-19.
Residents who made it out to the beach for the unofficial start of summer needed to wear a face covering and stay 6 feet away from others. Group activities, including contact sports were also restricted.
Despite the regulations, those who came out seemed to enjoy themselves.
"I keep my face covered, I wash my hands, I take all the precautions," says Liz Sokol, of Yorktown Heights. "So I haven't been scared but I've been waiting for this."
Capacity at the beach is capped at 50% with traffic cones blocking every other space to regular parking. Hand sanitizing stations are also set up on the boardwalk and staff were there to steer people away from places that are still closed like concession stands and picnic tables.
Those with a blanket or a chair on the sand are being asked to be 10 feet apart from other people.
"There's significant law enforcement presence throughout the beach," says New York State Parks Regional Director George Gorman. "And hopefully we don't have to use them but they are here."
Jones Beach, Hither Hills, Sunken Meadow and Robert Moses are all open. Swimming is allowed from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. but those who go in the ocean must stay 6 feet apart.
Lifeguards are on site to keep beachgoers safe.
