Nearly 50 years after the Roe v. Wade case legalized abortion across the country, a draft opinion that was leaked shows that the Supreme Court could overturn the decision.
Planned Parenthood says 26 states are poised to ban abortion if the decision is overturned, leaving 36 million women without access to abortion.
Constitutional lawyer Andrew Lieb says this could have big implications for New York and all other states.
"The big issue for all states, not just for New York, is that unless it becomes a state constitutional amendment or a federal constitutional amendment, it's a political football that's going to go back and forth depending upon who's in office," Lieb says.
The American Family Association of New York, a Christian-based group that upholds traditional family values, says if Roe v. Wade is overturned, it would be a victory for the pro-life cause.
"Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, that's what we're found on," says Connell Friel, president of American Family Association of New York. "The unborn have not had a right to life, and it's a true travesty that the United States has gone down this path, and it's an attempt to right a wrong that was done a long time ago."
The decision on abortion could also have implications for same-sex marriage.
LGBT Network president David Kilmnick says it could be the start of destroying civil and human rights that many fought their entire lives to have.
"We need to move forward, and we need to come together as one community, a united community, so that every single American can be who they want to be, love who they want to love and make their own choices for their bodies," Kilmnick says.
