Connecticut Rep. Jim Himes (D), the ranking member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, says he will be praying for the safety of U.S. servicemembers and civilians in harm’s way.

He added, “Military action in this region almost never ends well for the United States, and conflict with Iran can easily spiral and escalate in ways we cannot anticipate. It does not appear that Donald Trump has learned the lessons of history.”

Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy are also weighing in.

“The president has to be held accountable to the American people and explain what the objectives, the exit strategy, the long-term plan are, and what the cost may be of this war,” Blumenthal said.

“So again, what are we getting out of this? We’re not getting regime change to a democracy. We’re not going to eliminate their nuclear program. We are going to have a regional war breaking out. It won’t be the billionaire kids of Donald Trump and his buddies that die. It’s going to be the children of middle-class and poor families all across this country who are going to die for a war of choice, a war of vanity, an illegal war,” Murphy said.

Blumenthal and Murphy said the strikes never received authorization from Congress. The president went ahead and ordered it without approval.

Blumenthal said he’ll be pushing for a “war powers resolution” this week, which he called constitutionally necessary for any continued military action.
