Islip Town Supervisor Peter McGowan has resigned.
Islip Town spokesperson Patricia Kaloski says McGowan sent a one-sentence letter to Town Attorney Peter Cohalan tendering his resignation as of 9 a.m. Thursday.
McGowan was arraigned in criminal court in Central Islip on charges of grand larceny, receiving bribes and witness tapering. The longtime Republican leader was expected to appear in state Supreme Court in Riverhead at 2 p.m. to answer charges that he misused political campaign funds.
Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota has been conducting an inquiry into McGowan?s campaign funds. In February, Spota?s office seized McGowan?s $1 million campaign account as part of an ongoing investigation into political corruption.
