A day after police charged a man with DWI in a crash that killed two people in Islip Terrace, they revealed he was in the country illegally.
Nilssen Torres-Paredes stands accused of driving drunk and speeding when his vehicle slammed into a car driven by Paul Kind. Kind's best friend David Colagero and 24-year-old girlfriend Audra Kaczur were killed in the Lowell Avenue accident, while Kind escaped with minor injuries. Police say Paredes was placed on probation in 1996 for attempted firearm possession and deported months later. Police also say Paredes was driving without a license at the time of the accident.
Suffolk police report Paredes refused a Breathalyzer test and the results of a court-ordered blood check for alcohol content are pending. Paredes is being held on $200,000 bail and is expected to appear in court Friday.
