Police say a 17-year-old from Islip was killed after being involved in a hit-and-run crash Tuesday morning.
Former Islip High School basketball player Anil John got into a fender bender with another car that took off, police say.
According to police, John then pulled over on Crooked Hill Road in Brentwood to inspect the damage. He was struck by a passing vehicle driven by an 81-year-old East Northport man. John died a short time later.
The driver of the vehicle that hit John was taken to the hospital and is not facing charges.
Grief counselors were on hand at Islip High School to speak with students. Tyler Amorese, one of John's former basketball teammates, says the whole school is shocked.
"He was a good kid. Always worked very hard, and very passionate about school and had a bright future ahead of him," says Amorese.
John's family is calling for the hit-and-run driver to turn themselves in to authorities.
Anyone with information about either crash is asked to call 631-854-8352.
