Island Vote: Nassau County district attorney race

Island Vote: Nassau County district attorney race

One of the most watched contests on Long Island this Election Day will be the Nassau County district attorney race.
Madeline Singas became Nassau's acting district attorney following the election of Kathleen Rice to Congress in January. Singas is now hoping to win a four-year term as district attorney.
Her opponent, Kate Murray, was considered the early favorite due to her name recognition as supervisor of Hempstead, Long Island's largest town.
Experts now say that the race has tightened, in part because Singas has hammered home her experience as a prosecutor for 24 years.
Murray says one doesn't have to be a prosecutor to be an effective district attorney. She cites her leadership skills as the executive of a town with a population larger than four states. She also says she can be tough on crime.
Whoever wins the election will become only the third district attorney in Nassau County since 1974. Kathleen Rice held the office for nine years, and Denis Dillon held it for 31 years before that.
