Republicans are hoping to regain a seat in the state Senate's 8th District on Election Day.

State Senate candidate Jeff Pravato, a 49-year-old Republican and mayor of Massapequa Park, is hoping to unseat freshman state Sen. John Brooks.

Brooks was elected in 2016, beating out then-incumbent Michael Venditto amid the corruption scandal in the town of Oyster Bay that implicated his father, former supervisor John Venditto. It is arguably one of the hottest races on the Island this year and could help to shift control of the state Senate.

"We have a new wind blowing in Albany. We're going to have a Democratic majority," Brooks told News 12. "One of the disappointments of being in Albany this last year is being in the minority and seeing how little we can get done.”

Brooks says he’s anxious to get back to Albany to hopefully “get some real work done.”

His opponent says he's confident residents will put a Republican back in a seat that the GOP held for decades.

"We want to increase the school aid here. We want to bring infrastructure projects and beautification projects to the towns,” says Pravato.

Political analyst Mike Dawidziak says a blue wave may be expected this Election Day, but Republicans believe this seat is winnable.

"I think they look at Brooks as the accidental senator – that the only reason he won was because Micheal Venditto lost,” says Dawidziak.
