Crews demolished what was left of an Amityville home Monday after it exploded a day earlier. Meanwhile, investigators are trying to determine the exact cause of the apparent gas explosion.
The blast occurred at around 6 p.m. Sunday at 34 Meadow Lane. Homeowner Richard Brown says he noticed a strong gas smell, called 911 and got his wife and two children out of the home 9 minutes before it exploded.
?If everyone was sleeping, if it happened a few hours later, it could have been a much more tragic ending to this,? Brown says.
Neighbors say they heard an enormous bang and could feel their homes shake from the explosion.
Suffolk County arson investigators and National Grid officials spent much of Monday carefully picking through the rubble looking for clues that could lead them to a cause of the explosion. Officials will continue the search Tuesday.
