An investigation is underway in Belleville after a police officer was struck by a car while attempting to apprehend a suspect near Branch Brook Park Sunday evening, according to the mayor.

The suspect ran away and the injured officer and their partner were both taken to the hospital for treatment.

Their injuries were reported to be non-life-threatening.

There is conflicting information about whether shots were fired during the incident.

The mayor called the incident an officer-involved shooting, while the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office initially called it that, but later said it was not a shooting.

Officials have not yet clarified the circumstances surrounding the reports of gunfire.

Connecticut State Police say they took a suspect into custody in New Britain, about 2 and half hours away from Belleville after receiving a tip that the suspect's mother lives there.

In a statement to News 12 Connecticut State Police also referred to the initial incident as an "officer involved shooting."

News 12 will continue to follow this developing story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
